Importing Directly from the iPhone

Hello and welcome to this short tutorial about importing videos from your iPhone. You might already be using iCloud for photos and video - that’s cool, stay tuned the end of this video and I’ll talk a little more about workflow. .

If Videux is not already running, start it up using the launchpad or applications folder. Or, now you can even use Siri on the Mac to start it - kind of seem apropos for this job.

We need to connect the iPhone to your Mac via USB. For convenience, I bought this usb-c to lightning cable so I am not using any adapters. USB-C side for my Mac and the lightning side for the phone. Make sure your connectors are clean and watch out for these little black marks.

If the catalog is empty, we can click this button to start the import, but more often, you’ll use the File Menu here to do that.

A couple of things to watch for. If you haven’t plugged this phone into this Mac recently, it is going to ask you to “trust” the connection.

The second thing - your iPhone will need to be unlocked to start the download. You’ll see a message here on the status bar if that it’s locked.

It might take a minute but Videux will display thumbnails for all of the videos on the device. I have a lot of videos here, so I am going to just select a few examples. I can sort these lists to help me find the ones I want.

I select one by just clicking on it; I select a series by shift clicking, and I select individual videos by command clicking.

Now, this is where you get to tell Videux how you want the videos stored on your computer. This panel helps you keep your video collections organized and can even reorganize existing files. I’m going to choose to organize by a date hierarchy.

But rather than storing them on my local hard drive, I’m going to create a new storage area on an external hard drive where I’ll store these and future videos.

Ideally once you have these options set, you don’t change them and your video collection stays organized.

Ok, import is done, and here is my frog buddy.

As I said you might already be using iPhotos/Photos/iCloud for your photos and videos and it is a great service. But for videos that I want to use for a project,  I prefer to import directly from the phone and keep that workflow separate from my more goofing off iPhone friends and family fun collection. And if you decide to erase video off your phone to save space, the videos you import like this won’t be affected.

Check out more videos on the videux.com website for how to start getting your videos well organized.

Thank for watching!
