Importing an Entire External Drive

External hard drives (connected with USB, Thunderbolt, SATA, etc) are great for storing large amounts of video. These days, a tiny SSD with 2GB is not only extremely portable but also affordable. But as your collection of clips grows, it can get difficult to keep track of what is on each drive. Videux can help, and this article and video can show you how to get started.

The concept is pretty easy. First, connect the drive, then grab the drive from the desktop and drop it right into the middle of Videux. Or, if you prefer the file menu, choose “File->Add Videos from Disk…”, click on the computer icon in the sidebar, then click the drive you want and press “Open".

If you don’t see the drive on your desktop, or if the computer or drive are missing from the sidebar, not to worry. The video above explains how to use the Finder Preferences window to fix that.

New in Videux 2.0 - the Organizer. The Organizer Panel is a very powerful way to organize and even re-organize the directory structure of your video collection. In the video, I’ve chose the leave the files in their original location to start - I am importing about 12 hard drives and am not ready to start shuffling the files around. I’ll publish more about how I will get this mess organized soon.

One great Videux feature is that it retains your thumbnails, metadata, keywords and much more even if the drive goes offline. This means that I can import from multiple drives and work on getting things tidied up, even if some of the hard drives are not currently plugged in.
